The Examen d'État and the Diplôme d'État

Secondary school in the DR Congo ends with the national state exam (Examen d'État), and candidates who pass receive the Diplôme d'État, issued by the national education ministry. The diploma states the section and option studied and the percentage obtained; under the regulations a candidate needs at least 50% to pass, and the percentage is translated exactly as printed, never converted.

Year-by-year results are on the school report cards (bulletins), which give points against the maximum for each subject and period. A US school placing a student reads the bulletins; a college or an evaluator such as WES or ECE wants the diploma with them (see credential evaluation). The documents are in French and are translated in full, stamps and signatures included.

Copies, refugee files and names

Many Congolese families in the US came as refugees, often after years in a neighboring country, and may hold copies of their diplomas or school records issued in the country of asylum. We translate what exists and mark anything illegible; whether a copy is accepted is for the receiving office to decide. For teenagers starting a US school, see school enrollment.

Congolese names are often written as nom, postnom and prénom, and the postnom is part of the name, not a middle name; the translation keeps the order and follows your passport. See the Congolese transcript and birth certificate pages and our French page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My Diplôme d'État shows 62%.

That is your Examen d'État result. It is translated as printed; a credential evaluator decides what it corresponds to in the US.

Do I need my bulletins as well?

For school placement, usually yes. For college, ask; many want the diploma and the last years' bulletins together.

My postnom is missing from my US documents.

The translation reproduces the name exactly as the diploma gives it and follows your passport for spelling, so any difference is visible rather than hidden.
