The extract from the register, and how late a birth was declared

A Senegalese birth is recorded by the civil registrar (officier d'état civil) of the mairie of the place of birth, and the document people hold is the extract from the birth register (extrait du registre des actes de naissance), with the registry number, the child's and both parents' names and the date and hour of birth. It carries the commune's seal, the registrar's seal and signature, and the fee stamp; every one of them is translated. Records are in French, whatever language the family speaks. See our French page.

How late the birth was declared shows on the document. A birth declared between 45 days and a year after it is marked déclaration tardive; after a year it can only be registered on a court's authorization (jugement d'autorisation d'inscription), and the extract says it was registered by judgment. Those words are translated exactly: they explain the registration date and are what a consular officer looks for. Mobile court hearings (audiences foraines) have registered many births this way.

Bulletin de naissance, marginal notes and a recent copy

The bulletin de naissance is a shorter summary — registry number, names, date and hour of birth — and the State Department lists it as an acceptable alternate for visa purposes, although it does not show whether the birth was registered late. The full record has a section for marginal notes (mentions marginales) recording marriage, divorce and children; few copies have any, because the note has to be added in the home district.

In Senegal a civil document is usually treated as valid for about three months for administrative purposes, and a new extract can be requested from the mairie at any time. US offices set their own rules, but a recent extract avoids questions. For a visa case, see what the NVC asks for.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My extract says "déclaration tardive".

It means the birth was declared between 45 days and a year after it happened. It is translated exactly as written.

Can I submit a bulletin de naissance instead?

The State Department lists it as an acceptable alternate for visas. Other offices may want the extract; check with them. We translate either.

My birth was registered by a court judgment.

Then the extract says so, and you may also have the judgment itself. We translate both as written.
