What Afghan applicants usually hold
The central Afghan identity document is the tazkira, issued in paper booklet form for generations and more recently as an electronic card. Many Afghans have no birth certificate in the sense a US office expects, and what exists instead is the tazkira, a court attestation, or documents issued by a refugee agency or a third country.

Dates, names and the other language of Afghanistan
Afghan documents are dated in the Solar Hijri calendar, whose year begins around 21 March, so conversion to a Gregorian date has to be done for each date rather than by subtracting a fixed number. Many Afghans have no family name at all, which US forms — expecting a surname — handle badly; the translation reproduces the name as given and makes the structure clear.
