The tazkira is the underlying record
An Afghan passport rests on the tazkira, the national identity document. Older tazkiras are handwritten paper booklets with a photograph, a registration volume and page, and the father's and grandfather's names; the electronic tazkira is a card with a number.
Both are genuine and a person may hold one of each. The passport shows limited data, so for a family relationship the tazkira is the document, and we transcribe the volume and page of a paper one.
Solar Hijri dates
Afghan documents are dated in the Solar Hijri calendar, whose year begins at the spring equinox, so 1400 spans parts of 2021 and 2022 and a year does not map onto a single Gregorian one.
A date converted by subtracting a constant is wrong roughly a quarter of the time. We convert each individually and show both, which matters where a sequence of documents is what proves a chain.
Names without a family name
Afghan names commonly run given name, father's name, grandfather's name, with no inherited surname. Some people additionally use a tribal or regional name — Ahmadzai, Panjshiri, Hazara.
A US form demanding a last name takes the father's given name and calls it a family name, so a sibling's documents then appear to carry a different surname. We reproduce the name as written and explain the pattern.
Dari, Pashto, and documents issued abroad
Afghan documents appear in Dari or Pashto and a file frequently contains both. They are different languages sharing a script and each is translated.
