Parents are printed on the passport
A Bangladeshi passport prints the father's and mother's names on the data page, and for a married holder the spouse's name. Most passports in the world do not carry this.
It makes a Bangladeshi passport unusually useful for establishing a family relationship on its own, and it is frequently the evidence a US office needs without knowing to ask for it.
MRP and e-passport, side by side
Bangladesh moved from the machine-readable passport to an e-passport from 2020, and both circulate. The e-passport carries a chip and a different layout, and the profession field that appeared on older books was reconsidered in the transition.
We name the type as issued rather than describing every book the same way, because the fields differ between them.
Two record systems, two authorities
Birth registration runs through the BRIS system and local government registrars; the adult identity record sits with the Election Commission, which issues the NID.
A name or a date may have been corrected in one and not the other, so a passport and a birth certificate can disagree legitimately. We identify which record each document comes from.
Honorifics, and the romanisation
Bangladeshi names carry honorifics and religious elements — Md., Mst., Abdul, Begum — placed where a US form expects a given name, and a person may drop or add them across documents without any legal change.
Bangla has no official romanisation, so Chowdhury, Choudhury and Chaudhuri are one name. We follow the passport and note variants. See our Bengali page.
