The citizenship certificate is the real document
In Nepal the document that settles a person's legal identity is the nāgarikatā — the citizenship certificate issued by the District Administration Office — not the birth registration. A passport rests on it.
So for any question about name, parentage or district of origin, the citizenship certificate is what a US office needs, and it is the document applicants most often leave out. We name the district and the issuing office exactly.
Bikram Sambat, with no formula
Nepali documents are dated in Bikram Sambat, roughly 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar, with months of varying length that change year to year. There is no formula: the conversion is done against a table.
The passport prints Gregorian dates, so a passport and its supporting documents appear to disagree by half a century. We convert each date individually and show both.
Late birth registration
Universal birth registration in Nepal is recent, so many adults hold a registration made years after the event rather than a contemporaneous record. That is lawful and ordinary.
A late registration and a citizenship certificate with different spellings is usually clerical rather than substantive, and we translate both and say what each is.
Caste surnames, and the Bhutanese Nepali community
Nepali surnames carry caste and ethnic information — Shrestha, Adhikari, Tamang, Gurung, Bishwakarma — and Devanagari romanises inconsistently, so one name appears several ways.
A large Nepali-speaking population in the United States are Lhotshampa, Bhutanese of Nepali origin resettled from camps in eastern Nepal. They speak Nepali and are not from Nepal, and their documents say so. See our Nepali page.
