The NRC number reads like an address
The NRC — the national registration card — number is structured: a region number, a township code in Burmese letters, a citizenship category letter (N for a full citizen, E for an associate, P for a naturalised citizen) and a serial.
So the number states where the holder was registered and their citizenship category on its face, and a US reader given only the digits has lost most of it. We transcribe the whole string and explain the category letter.
There are no surnames
Burmese names are not divided into given and family names. A child's name need share nothing with a parent's and there is nothing to inherit, so a US form demanding a last name splits a single name arbitrarily and the split differs between documents.
U, Daw, Ko, Ma and Maung are titles rather than name components, and a person may appear with or without one. Neither is a change of name.
Passport types, and the letters
Myanmar issues passport types marked by letter for different purposes — ordinary, for job, for business — and the type appears on the book. It affects what the holder may do abroad.
A passport marked for employment is a different instrument from an ordinary one, and we name the type as printed rather than describing every book as a passport.
Burma, Myanmar, and statelessness
Documents name the country as Burma or Myanmar depending on their date, and cities as Rangoon or Yangon. Both name the same places and we reproduce what the document says.
Rohingya applicants are frequently unable to obtain Myanmar identity documents at all, and their files contain UNHCR or camp-issued documents instead. We name the issuing body exactly. See our Burmese page.
