Nasab follows the marriage
Afghan family law applies Islamic law as codified, under which nasab — lineage — is established principally through a valid marriage. There is no acknowledgment instrument of the civil-law kind.
So the Afghan route is generally proof that a marriage existed rather than acknowledgment of a child, which is a different case with a different set of documents. We name what the instrument actually establishes.
The nikahnama, and the unregistered marriage
Marriage registration has historically been partial in Afghanistan, and many marriages are evidenced by a nikahnama witnessed by the community rather than by a state certificate.
A court may confirm such a marriage, and that confirmation is what regularises the children's lineage. We name the court and translate the reasoning as well as the conclusion.
The tazkira records the family
The tazkira is the operative identity record and it carries the father's and grandfather's names, so the tazkira is what evidences a family relationship rather than a birth certificate.
Older tazkiras are handwritten booklets with a registration volume and page, which we transcribe; the electronic tazkira is a card with a number.
