Registration is limited
Birth registration in Myanmar has been partial and is administered through township health and administrative offices, so many people hold no contemporaneous certificate.
Filiation may therefore be evidenced by a household list, a township record, a school record or a sworn declaration. We name the issuing body and describe the document for what it is.
The household list, and the NRC
The household list (ain-htaung-su-sarin) records the members of a household with their relationships and is a primary document for proving family ties in Myanmar.
The NRC card number carries a township code and a citizenship category letter, and children's cards follow from their parents' status. We transcribe the whole string and explain the category.
No surnames, and the languages
Burmese names are not divided into given and family names, so a child's name need share nothing with a parent's and a shared surname cannot be used to infer a relationship.
