The 12th grade certificate, in three languages

Afghan secondary school ends after grade 12 with the 12th grade graduation certificate, often called the baccalaureate, issued by the Ministry of Education; the vocational version comes from the ministry's technical and vocational education department. The certificate is awarded in English, Dari and Pashto. Where the English text is printed on it, what still needs translating is whatever appears only in Dari or Pashto — handwritten entries, stamps, notes on the back.

Grades are given out of 100, with marks under 40 a fail. Evaluators usually want the grade sheets for grades 10, 11 and 12 with the certificate, and those are often in Dari or Pashto only. The Kankor, the entrance exam for public universities, has its own result document, which does not by itself show graduation. Dates are in the Solar Hijri calendar and are given as written with the Gregorian equivalent in brackets: 1398 (2019–2020).

Interrupted records

Many Afghan families in the US arrived through evacuation or as refugees and hold photographs, copies or partial records. We translate what exists and mark anything illegible; whether a copy is enough is for the school or evaluator to decide. Documents issued since August 2021 may carry the name Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan instead of Islamic Republic, and the translation reproduces whichever is printed. Girls have been barred from secondary school since 2022, so a young woman's record may stop at grade 6.

For a teenager enrolling in a US school, see school enrollment; for an adult who needs proof of high school for community college or work, the certificate and grade sheets go together. Names follow your passport. See the Afghan transcript and birth certificate pages and our Persian and Dari and Pashto pages.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My certificate is in English, Dari and Pashto.

Then only the parts not already in English need translating, such as handwritten entries and stamps.

I only have a photo of my certificate.

We translate it as it is and mark anything we cannot read. Ask the receiving office whether a copy is acceptable.

Is my Kankor result a high school diploma?

No. It is the university entrance exam result. The 12th grade certificate is what shows graduation.
