The general secondary certificate and its totals

Syrian secondary school (grades 10 to 12) ends with the General Secondary Education Certificate (الشهادة الثانوية العامة), in the literary or the scientific branch, chosen from grade 11. There are also a technical secondary certificate, a vocational certificate, and a religious secondary certificate administered by the Ministry of Religious Affairs rather than the Ministry of Education. The translation names exactly which one you hold.

Results are totals, not averages. Since the 2008 curriculum the literary branch is out of 280 with 118 the minimum, and the scientific branch out of 290 with 116; earlier certificates use 240 and 260. Each subject shows its maximum and minimum marks, with 50% required in Arabic and 40% in other subjects, and the translation keeps every column. Converting a total to a GPA is credential evaluation.

Copies and other issuers

Many Syrians in the US left before they could request documents, and photographed or damaged copies are common; we translate what is legible and mark what is not. Some students sat exams run by authorities other than the Damascus ministry during the war, and Palestine refugees in UNRWA schools hold Syrian certificates. The translation names the issuer as printed and leaves acceptance to the receiving office.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication stamps are translated with the certificate. Typical US uses are school enrollment (see school enrollment), community college and evaluation by WES or ECE. See the Syrian transcript and birth certificate pages and our Arabic page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My total is 230. Out of what?

It depends on the branch and the year: 290 for the scientific branch and 280 for the literary branch since 2008. The maximum printed on your certificate is translated with the total.

My certificate was issued outside Syria.

We translate it naming the issuer exactly as printed. Whether it is accepted is for the receiving office to decide.
