The civil registry extract, and the family record
Syrian civil status is held by the civil registry of the person's registered place of origin, which is not necessarily where they were born or lived. Two documents recur: an individual civil registry extract, and the family registry extract — a record listing the household together, which is frequently what proves a relationship between parent and child or between spouses.
Because the family extract shows everyone at once, it is often the most useful single document in a Syrian file, and it is worth asking whether the office receiving your papers will accept it.
Obtaining documents, and what that means for the copy you hold
Applicants outside Syria usually cannot obtain records in person, so what arrives is a document requested through a relative, an authorised representative or a consulate, then photographed and sent. Copies several stages removed from the original are normal in these files.
