The Thanaweya Amma

Egypt's general secondary education certificate (الثانوية العامة, Thanaweya Amma) is awarded by the Ministry of Education and Technical Education after national exams at the end of secondary school. It states the student's division — science, mathematics or literary — each subject's marks out of its maximum, the total and the percentage, which is what Egyptian university placement turns on. Subjects marked outside the total (خارج المجموع) are translated with that note, so nobody adds them in.

Al-Azhar schools award their own secondary certificate (الثانوية الأزهرية), and technical schools a technical secondary diploma; each is a different credential and is named as printed, not as Thanaweya Amma. Eastern Arabic numerals are given in Western digits, and every mark and percentage is reproduced exactly.

Stamps and what US offices want

Egyptian certificates used abroad usually carry stamps from the education authorities and an authentication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; every stamp is translated with its number and date. US college admissions offices and evaluators such as WES or ECE usually want the certificate with its marks; converting a percentage to a GPA is theirs to do (see credential evaluation). For a teenager enrolling in a US school, recent report cards matter more — see school enrollment.

Arabic names romanize several ways, so the translation follows your passport and keeps the full chain of names. See the Egyptian transcript and birth certificate pages and our Arabic page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My certificate is from Al-Azhar.

It is translated as the Al-Azhar secondary certificate, which is what it is, with every mark and stamp.

Do you convert my percentage to a GPA?

No. The percentage and total stay as printed; the evaluator does the conversion.

My certificate lists subjects with no marks in the total.

Those are subjects outside the total. They are translated with that note, so the total on the translation matches the original.
