Van, de and van der are part of the surname, and forms lose them
Dutch surnames carry particles — van, de, van der, ter — called a tussenvoegsel. They belong to the name, but Dutch records store them in a separate field, and that is where the trouble starts: a US form with one surname box gets "van der Berg" split, reordered or dropped, and the person stops matching their own documents.
Two details that surprise people. In the Netherlands names are alphabetised under the main part, so Jan de Vries is filed under V; in Belgium the same name is filed under V for "Van" but the convention differs, so Flemish and Dutch documents are not sorted the same way. And the particle is capitalised only when the given name is absent: Peter de Vries, but De Vries on its own. We reproduce the name exactly as the document writes it and keep it identical across a file.
