The deskundige, and the registers
A Dutch court-appointed deskundige is instructed by the court, which settles the questions after hearing the parties. Two registers matter: the NRGD for forensic experts in criminal matters, a statutory register with assessed competence, and the LRGD for court experts more generally.
NRGD registration is a substantive qualification with defined fields, and a criminal forensic report states it. We translate the registration and the field rather than describing the expert as registered.
The NFI, and institutional forensic work
The Nederlands Forensisch Instituut carries out most forensic examination in Dutch criminal cases, and its reports use a standardised structure with explicit likelihood ratio reasoning — stating how much more probable the findings are under one hypothesis than another.
That reasoning is the substance of the conclusion and it is easy to mistranslate into a plain assertion of identity. We keep the hypotheses and the strength expression exactly as the report frames them.
The concept report, and the parties' comments
Dutch practice has the expert circulate a concept — a draft report — to the parties, who comment, before the final version is filed with the comments and the expert's responses appended.
So the final report contains the draft's reasoning, the objections and the answers. Translating only the conclusions removes the record of what was contested.
Medical assessment, and the UWV
Much Dutch medical documentation is not litigation but UWV assessment for incapacity benefit, carried out by an insurance physician and a labour expert, producing a percentage band of loss of earning capacity rather than a clinical grade.
