The marks are not accents, they are the word

Yoruba is a tonal language written with tone marks above vowels and a dot below e, o and s. Those marks distinguish different words entirely: ọkọ̀ is a vehicle, ọkọ is a husband, oko is a farm. A document typed without them is genuinely ambiguous, and a translator who guesses is guessing.

Nigerian systems frequently strip the marks, so names arrive flattened. We reproduce the name exactly as the document spells it, keep it identical across every page of a file, and note where the unmarked spelling could be read more than one way.

Names carry their circumstances

A Yoruba given name is a statement, not a label. Oruko àmútọ̀runwá are names given for the circumstances of the birth — Taiwo and Kehinde for the first and second twin, Idowu for the child after twins — and a reader who sees Taiwo and Kehinde on two certificates is looking at twins, which matters in a family-based petition.

Nigerian documents are ordinarily in English, so Yoruba translation is usually needed for the material around them: letters, oaths, community records, church documents. We say which you need rather than translating a certificate that is already in English.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My name has no accent marks on the certificate.

Common — Nigerian systems strip them. We reproduce the spelling as it stands and note where it is ambiguous.

Do Nigerian certificates need translating?

Usually not; they are in English. Yoruba translation is for letters, oaths and community records.

Two certificates say Taiwo and Kehinde.

Those are twin names, first and second born. We explain it rather than leaving a reader to miss the relationship.
