Standard Igbo and the dialect a document is actually written in
Igbo has many dialects and a twentieth-century Standard Igbo built on top of them, and a document may be written in either. Older church and community records in particular use local forms that a translator trained only on the standard will misread.
Written Igbo uses dotted vowels — ị, ọ, ụ — and a tone system that changes meaning. Those diacritics are routinely dropped by Nigerian systems, which leaves a name that can be read several ways. We keep the spelling the document uses and make the ambiguity explicit rather than picking one silently.
What actually needs translating in an Igbo file
Nigerian civil and court documents are issued in English, so an Igbo translation is normally needed for what surrounds them: letters, threats, church and parish records, statements from a village or family head, and documents from the Biafra-related organisations that appear in asylum claims.
