The statement has to be stamped and signed
A Nigerian bank statement used for a visa or a formal purpose is stamped and signed by the bank, frequently with a covering reference letter, and an unstamped printout is routinely rejected.
The stamp, the signature block and the officer's designation are part of the document and we translate or transcribe all of them rather than describing the page as stamped.
NUBAN, and the domiciliary account
Nigerian accounts use a ten-digit NUBAN number, and many people additionally hold a domiciliary account denominated in US dollars, pounds or euros — a distinct account type with its own number and its own statement.
A file may therefore contain two statements for one person in two currencies, which is ordinary. We name the account type and the currency on each.
The BVN
Every Nigerian bank customer has a Bank Verification Number, eleven digits, which is common across all their accounts at every bank and is the durable identifier.
It is the field that ties two statements to one person, and it is more useful than a name for that purpose. We reproduce it exactly.
English, and what still needs doing
Nigerian bank documents are in English, so a translation is usually unnecessary — ask the office first, because many accept the original and we would rather you kept the money.
