The NIS, the NIN and the data page
Nigerian passports are issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service, and since the national identity rollout a NIN — National Identification Number — is required to obtain one. The NIN, rather than the passport number, is the durable identifier.
We reproduce both. A passport is renewed and renumbered; the NIN stays, which makes it the cross-check across a Nigerian file.
Date of birth, and why it is contested
Universal birth registration in Nigeria is relatively recent, and many adults were registered late or hold a declaration of age — a sworn statement of date of birth — rather than a contemporaneous certificate.
So a date of birth on a Nigerian passport may rest on a declaration, and a discrepancy with another document is a documentation history rather than a fabrication. We translate each instrument for what it is and name it.
Names, and the regional patterns
Nigerian naming varies sharply by region: Yoruba and Igbo names are meaningful phrases, northern names follow an Arabic-influenced pattern with the father's name, and many people carry an English baptismal name alongside a traditional one.
Switching between them across documents is usage rather than a legal change, and a change of name proper is done by sworn affidavit and newspaper publication. We name which the document records.
English, and what still needs translating
Nigerian documents are in English, so a translation of the passport is usually unnecessary — ask the office first, because many accept the original and we would rather you kept the money.
