The father or husband is printed on the biodata page

A Pakistani passport prints the father's name for an unmarried holder and the husband's name for a married woman, directly on the biodata page. Most passports in the world do not carry this, and it is frequently the evidence a US office needs.

It also means a woman's passport changes on marriage in a way a US reader will not expect, and an older and a newer passport for the same person will show different names in that field. That is the form working, not a discrepancy.

The religion field

Pakistani passports record the holder's religion, and for Ahmadi applicants the declaration required has been the subject of long-running controversy. The field is on the document and we translate it as printed.

In an asylum matter that field may be directly material, and omitting it from a translation removes evidence. We reproduce it without comment.

CNIC, and the Family Registration Certificate

The passport shows the CNIC — the thirteen-digit national identity number — which encodes the locality of registration and a family serial and does not change with a name.

For proving a family relationship, NADRA issues a Family Registration Certificate listing the household against that family number. It is the document US offices actually want and applicants rarely send it.

English and Urdu, and the name spellings

Pakistani passports are printed in English and Urdu, so a translation of the passport itself is frequently unnecessary — ask the office first.

The two renderings of a name regularly differ: Muhammad, Mohammad, Mohammed, Md. That is transliteration and not a change of name. See our Urdu page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
