White and Green Hmong are different enough to matter

Hmong has two main varieties in the United States — Hmong Der (White) and Mong Leng (Green) — and they differ in sounds, some vocabulary and even the community's own name for itself. A translator or interpreter from one is not automatically right for the other, and in a legal or medical setting the mismatch shows.

The final consonant is a tone, not a sound

Written Hmong uses the Romanized Popular Alphabet, devised in the 1950s, in which a final consonant letter marks the tone rather than a sound: the b, j, v, s, g and m at the end of a syllable are never pronounced. Pob, poj and pos are three different words.

That is why a Hmong name looks to an English reader as though it has stray letters, and why dropping them destroys the word. Most Hmong families also have no long written record tradition, so US files rest on refugee camp registrations, resettlement papers and affidavits rather than civil certificates. We translate those and name the issuing body as it stands.

A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
