The koseki, not a birth certificate
Japan does not issue a standalone birth certificate. A birth is an entry in the family register, the koseki, and what you submit is a copy of that register: a koseki tōhon, the full record of everyone in it, or a koseki shōhon, an extract for one person. Marriages, divorces, adoptions and deaths are recorded in the same register, which is why one koseki often proves several things at once.
We also translate the residence record (jūminhyō), university transcripts and graduation certificates, driving licences and court documents.
Era years and name order
Japanese official documents date events in imperial era years — Reiwa, Heisei, Shōwa — so a birth recorded as Shōwa 60 is 1985. Those conversions are done date by date, because getting one wrong moves a date of birth by decades and puts the translation at odds with the passport beside it.
Names are written surname first, and the same characters can be read several ways. We use the romanization on your passport so every document in your file names the same person.

What is the difference between a koseki tōhon and a koseki shōhon?
A tōhon is a complete copy of the family register; a shōhon is an extract covering one person. We translate either, but check which one the receiving office asked for before you order.
Are Japanese era dates converted to Western dates?
Yes, each date is converted individually, and the original era notation is kept where it helps the reader match the translation to the document.
