Kantei, and the court-appointed kanteinin
Japanese civil procedure provides for kantei (鑑定) — expert examination — carried out by a kanteinin (鑑定人) appointed by the court and sworn. The parties may propose candidates; the court appoints.
Japanese courts use expert evidence more sparingly than US litigation does, and a Japanese file with a full expert report is a case where the court considered it necessary. That itself is information about the document.
Shindansho, and the medical report that is not a kantei
Most Japanese medical documentation in US files is not a court expert report at all but a shindansho (診断書) — a physician's certificate — issued on a standard form for an employer, an insurer or a public office.
Traffic accident injury assessments follow the jibaiseki compulsory insurance framework with defined impairment grades from 1 to 14, where 1 is the most severe. That grading runs the opposite direction from a percentage and we state the direction.
Appraisals, and the unique vocabulary
Real estate appraisal (fudōsan kantei) is a licensed profession with a statutory qualification, and Japanese property valuation uses concepts with no direct US analogue — rosenka roadside land values published for tax purposes, and kōji chika published standard land prices.
A valuation citing those figures is citing published official data and we name the series rather than converting it to a generic "assessed value".
Seals, and the report's authentication
A Japanese report is authenticated with the author's seal (印鑑) rather than only a signature, and an institutional report carries the institution's seal. For formal use, a registered seal with a inkan shōmeisho certificate may accompany it.
