Most Japanese divorces never see a court
More than nine in ten Japanese divorces are kyōgi rikon — divorce by mutual consent under Article 763 of the Civil Code. Both spouses sign a notification form (rikon todoke), two adult witnesses co-sign, it is filed at the municipal office, and the divorce takes effect on acceptance. No court, no hearing, no judgment and no decree.
So there is usually no Japanese divorce decree to produce. What exists is the rikon todoke juri shōmeisho — the Certificate of Acceptance of Notification of Divorce — and the entry in the koseki family register. A US court expecting a decree will need this explained, and the translation names each document for what it is.
Era years, and the register
Japanese documents date by imperial era — Reiwa, Heisei, Shōwa — so a divorce in "Heisei 25" is 2013 and nothing on the page says so. Each is converted individually and both shown.
The koseki records the divorce and a new register may be created for the spouse who leaves. A koseki tohon runs to several pages and lists everyone in the register, struck-through entries included; all of it is translated. See our Japanese marriage certificate page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
