The certificado de estudios is the document that counts

Peruvian secondary school runs five years, 1st to 5th grado de secundaria. What proves completion is the certificado de estudios, listing every course and mark for each year; a diploma a school hands out at graduation does not replace it. Certificates used to be issued by the school with the stamp of the local education office (UGEL); the Ministry of Education (MINEDU) now also issues them online, with a code that lets anyone verify the certificate.

Older certificates use the 0 to 20 scale, with 11 the pass. Since the national curriculum reform, secondary report cards increasingly use letter levels: AD (logro destacado), A (logro esperado), B (en proceso) and C (en inicio). A certificate can show both systems across different years; each is translated as printed, with its key, and converting either is a credential evaluator's work.

Apostille and US uses

Peru has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 2010, so a certificate prepared for use abroad may carry an apostille from the foreign ministry, and older ones may carry UGEL or ministry stamps on the back. All of it is translated, front and back, including the verification code.

In the US the certificado is used for school placement (see school enrollment translations), community college and adult education admission, employers, and evaluation before university — see the Peruvian transcript page. Names follow the passport and the birth certificate. See our Spanish page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My school gave me a diploma. Is that enough?

Usually not. The certificado de estudios is the official record of completion and marks; send it, and the diploma too if you were asked for it.

What do AD, A, B and C mean?

They are Peru's achievement levels, from logro destacado down to en inicio. We translate them with the key, as printed.
