The diploma, the relevé de notes, and the reform

The French baccalauréat — general, technological or professional — is a national diploma, and the grades are not on the diploma itself but on the relevé de notes, which lists each component with its grade out of 20 and its coefficient. Since the 2021 reform, continuous assessment counts for 40% of the final grade and the final exams for 60%. An average of 10 or more passes; 8 to under 10 gives access to the oral second round (second groupe); below 8 fails. Results such as admis (passed) and ajourné (failed) are translated with their meaning.

Honors (mentions) follow the average: assez bien from 12, bien from 14, très bien from 16 and, since 2021, très bien avec félicitations du jury from 18. They are translated as French honors with their thresholds, not as Latin honors or a GPA.

Where the bac is used in the US

College admissions offices and evaluators such as WES or ECE usually want the diploma or the attestation de réussite together with the relevé de notes; a family enrolling a child in a US school brings the term report cards (bulletins trimestriels) or the livret scolaire instead (see school enrollment). Each is a separate document. Grades stay out of 20 — a 14 is a good French mark — and the conversion is the evaluator's job; see credential evaluation.

A baccalauréat awarded by another country is a different credential under the same name: the Moroccan bac is Moroccan, even when the documents are in French. See the French transcript and birth certificate pages and our French page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the diploma or the relevé de notes?

Usually both, or the attestation de réussite plus the relevé. The grades are only on the relevé.

Will you convert my 14/20 to a GPA?

No. Grades stay on the 0-20 scale as printed; WES, ECE and similar evaluators do the conversion.

Ready to get started?
