Graduation certificate, huikao and gaokao

A Chinese high school graduate holds the 普通高中毕业证书 (general senior secondary school graduation certificate), issued by the school, and a transcript (成绩单) covering the three years. Two exams sit beside them. The academic proficiency test (学业水平考试, the huikao) is a provincial subject exam that counts toward graduation, reported in grades or levels that vary by province; the national college entrance exam (高考, the gaokao) is scored, in most provinces, out of 750.

Each is a separate record: the graduation certificate does not show the huikao results, and the gaokao score is a report rather than a certificate. US universities that want these results usually ask for verification reports from CHESICC, the Ministry of Education's verification center, which issues them in English; those need no translation. The Chinese originals, and any notarial certificate (公证书) bound with them, are translated in full, seals included.

Scores, scales and names

School transcripts usually mark out of 100 with 60 the pass, but some subjects may be marked out of 150, as the gaokao papers in Chinese, mathematics and a foreign language are; the translation keeps the maximum next to every score. Converting any of it to a GPA is credential evaluation. Students who leave before graduating hold only transcripts and a school letter, which are translated as what they are.

Chinese names put the surname first; the translation follows the Pinyin spelling and order of your passport. Typical US uses are transferring into a US high school (see school enrollment), community college and university admission. See the Chinese transcript and birth certificate pages and our Chinese page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to translate my CHESICC report?

Not if it was issued in English. We translate the Chinese documents it verifies.

Is the huikao the same as the gaokao?

No. The huikao is the provincial subject test that counts toward graduation; the gaokao is the university entrance exam. Each result is its own document.
