Three forms, and only two show your parents
France issues a birth record (acte de naissance) from the town hall (mairie) of the place of birth in three forms: the copie intégrale, a full copy of the entry with every marginal note; the extrait avec filiation, which gives the person and both parents; and the extrait sans filiation, which leaves the parents out. Most US uses need parentage, so the extract without it is the wrong document — check before translating.
People born abroad to French parents have their records kept by the central civil registry in Nantes (Service central d'état civil) rather than a mairie, and the copy says so.
The marginal notes are the point
The mentions marginales printed beside or below the entry record marriage, divorce, a civil partnership (PACS), recognition by a parent, a change of name or death. A copy issued years ago shows only the notes that existed then, so order a recent one if anything has changed. Every note on the copy is translated, in place.
The multilingual extract that French town halls also issue is a summary made for use between European countries, not a full copy, so it is no substitute for a translated copie intégrale. Dates and hours in the act are written in words and are translated in words. See our French page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
Which form should I order, the copie intégrale or an extrait?
For US immigration, a copie intégrale or an extrait avec filiation. The extrait sans filiation does not show your parents.
Can I use the multilingual extract instead of a translation?
It is a summary made for use between European countries. US offices generally expect a full copy with a certified English translation.
My copy is from years ago.
If you have married, divorced or changed name since, order a recent copy: the marginal notes on an old one are out of date.
