Licence, master, doctorat — and the grandes écoles
French higher education follows the licence (three years), master (two more) and doctorat pattern, and the diploma names the field, the specialization (mention, parcours) and sometimes a distinction (mention bien, très bien). The names are kept and explained rather than replaced by American degree titles: deciding that a licence equals a bachelor's is a credential evaluator's finding, not a translator's.
Grandes écoles and specialized schools issue their own diplomas, often with a state recognition (visé, grade de master) printed on them, which is translated exactly because it is what gives the diploma its standing.

What USCIS requires
