The marriage act and the family booklet

A French marriage is recorded by the mairie where it took place in an acte de mariage, issued as a full copy or an extract like a birth record. It names both spouses with their parents, the date and place, and whether a marriage contract was signed before a notary and, if so, which one — a detail that matters for property and that is translated exactly.

At the wedding the couple also receives a livret de famille, a booklet that collects extracts of the marriage and of the children's births. It is a convenient summary, but offices abroad usually want a recent copy of the act itself.

Divorce is a note in the margin

A French divorce is recorded as a marginal note on the marriage act (and on each spouse's birth act), so a copy issued before the divorce shows a marriage still in force. Order a recent copy, and every note on it is translated. The judgment or the notarial divorce agreement itself is a separate document — see divorce decrees.

See the French birth certificate page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Is the livret de famille enough?

Usually not on its own. Offices generally want a recent copy of the marriage act, which shows the current marginal notes.

We divorced in France. Does the marriage act show it?

A recent copy does, as a marginal note. An older copy does not; order a new one.

Is the notary for the marriage contract translated?

Yes, with the rest of the act. It is part of the record.
