Bulletin n° 3 of the casier judiciaire
France keeps criminal records in a national register, the casier judiciaire national, which issues three levels of extract. Bulletins 1 and 2 go only to courts and authorized administrations; bulletin n° 3 is the one a person can request for themselves, free and online, and it is what you will hold. It lists only the more serious convictions, which is why some offices abroad ask for it alongside an explanation.
It arrives as a PDF with a reference number and date of issue — the two things an office checks to see that it is genuine and recent — and both are translated exactly, as is a "néant" (nil) result.
What USCIS requires
