Two certificates: the school's and the matura

Finishing a Polish liceum produces two separate documents. The school issues the świadectwo ukończenia liceum (certificate of completion), with final marks on the 1-to-6 school scale — 6 celujący (excellent) down to 2 dopuszczający, the lowest pass, and 1 niedostateczny, a fail — and a behavior grade. The matura is a separate exam: those who pass receive the świadectwo dojrzałości (matriculation certificate) from the regional examination board (Okręgowa Komisja Egzaminacyjna), not from the school.

The matura certificate reports each subject as a percentage and as a percentile, which shows how the result compares with other candidates, and it distinguishes the basic and extended levels (poziom podstawowy, poziom rozszerzony). A percentage and a percentile are two different numbers and neither is a grade; both stay exactly as printed, with the level for each exam.

What US offices need

For enrolling a student in a US school the completion certificate and recent report cards are usually what the district wants (see school enrollment). For college admission and for an evaluator such as WES or ECE, send both certificates: one proves graduation, the other the exit exam. A technikum graduate holds a technikum certificate and often vocational qualification documents, each translated separately. Converting a 5 or a 78% into a GPA is credential evaluation, not translation.

Polish letters (ą, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż) are kept in names, which follow your passport, and an apostille on the certificate is translated with it. See the Polish transcript and birth certificate pages and our Polish page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2 on my certificate a fail?

No. On the Polish school scale 1 is the fail and 2 (dopuszczający) is the lowest pass. The grade names are translated so it reads correctly.

I finished liceum but did not pass the matura.

Then you hold the school completion certificate. We translate it; whether it meets a particular requirement is for the receiving office to decide.

Why does my matura show percentages and percentiles?

They are two ways the examination board reports a result. Both are translated as printed.
