Secundaria, bachillerato, and who issues each

Mexican schooling ends in two stages, each with its own certificate. Lower secondary (secundaria, grades 7 to 9) ends with a certificado de terminación de estudios issued by the education authorities under the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP); recent certificates are electronic, signed with a digital seal and checked by QR code. Upper secondary — bachillerato or preparatoria, normally three years — ends with a certificate issued by the subsystem that runs the school: a federal or state system, a university's preparatoria, or a private school with official recognition (RVOE).

The bachillerato certificate lists every subject with its final mark and the overall average (promedio), usually on a 0 to 10 scale with 6 the pass; some institutions pass at 7 or mark out of 100. Marks are translated exactly as printed and never turned into a GPA — that is a credential evaluator's job. The folio number, the digital seal strings and the note that the document can be verified by QR code are all carried into the translation.

How it is used in the United States, and what goes wrong

Parents enrolling a teenager bring the secundaria certificate and the report cards (boletas) for any grades since — see school enrollment translations. Adults use the bachillerato certificate for community college admission, adult education programs, employers who ask for proof of high school completion, and the evaluation a university requires; the Mexican transcript page covers what comes after.

A school may also hand out a graduation diploma for the ceremony; the certificate is the official record, so send that. Documents prepared for use abroad are often apostilled, and the apostille is a page of the translation. Both surnames must match the passport and the birth certificate. See our Spanish page and the general high school diploma page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My secundaria certificate has a QR code and no handwritten signature.

Electronic SEP certificates are signed with a digital seal. We translate the whole certificate, including the seal data and the folio, and note where the QR code appears.

Will you convert my 0-10 marks to a US GPA?

No. The marks and the average are translated as printed; a credential evaluator does the conversion.

Is the apostille translated too?

Yes. It is part of the document you submit, so it is translated with it.

Ready to get started?

Upload your documents and receive your certified translation, typically within 24 hours.
