Ciclo básico, ciclo diversificado, and a title named for the career

Guatemalan secondary school has two cycles. The three-year ciclo básico ends with a diploma de ciclo básico. The ciclo diversificado that follows, two or three years depending on the program, ends with a title named for the career studied: Bachiller en Ciencias y Letras, Perito Contador, Maestro de Educación Primaria and many others. The title is translated with the Spanish kept beside it, and "Bachiller" is never rendered as a bachelor's degree: it is a secondary qualification.

The marks come on separate certificates of studies (certificados de estudios), usually one per school year, on a 0 to 100 scale where 60 is the pass. They are translated as printed, every subject and every year, along with the stamps and registration notes on the front and back. What a 75 in Guatemala means in US terms is for a credential evaluator to say, not the translator.

Using a Guatemalan diploma in the United States

Teenagers who arrive mid-way through school are placed by the district from their last certificates of studies — see school enrollment translations. Adults use the title and the certificates for community college admission, adult education programs, employers and for an evaluation before university study. Universities nearly always want the certificates as well as the title; the Guatemalan transcript page explains the university side.

Guatemala joined the Apostille Convention in 2017, so documents prepared for use abroad may carry an apostille, which is translated too. Names follow the passport and the birth certificate, with both surnames in order. See our Spanish page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Is "Bachiller en Ciencias y Letras" a bachelor's degree?

No. It is the academic secondary title. The translation keeps the Spanish name and does not call it a bachelor's degree.

Do I need the title or the certificates of studies?

Usually both: the title proves you finished, the certificates show the subjects and marks. Send what the institution listed.
