The diploma de bachiller and the acta de grado are two documents

A Colombian school graduate receives a diploma de bachiller (académico or técnico) and, separately, an acta de grado: the record of the graduation itself, with the act number and the book and folio where the school registered it. Many institutions ask for both, plus the grade certificates (certificados de notas) for the last school years — often 9th through 11th. Sending the diploma alone is the most common reason a file comes back.

Since Decreto 1290 of 2009, each school sets its own numeric scale but must express every mark on the national performance scale: Desempeño Superior, Alto, Básico and Bajo, where Bajo is a fail. Certificates often show both the number and the level, and both are translated as printed. Results of the national Saber 11 exam, issued by ICFES, are a separate report and translated as such.

Secretaría de Educación, apostille, and US uses

For use abroad, school documents usually go first to the municipal or departmental Secretaría de Educación, which validates the school's signatures, and then to the Cancillería for an apostille, requested online. A private school's documents may also carry a notary's recognition of signature. Each of these steps leaves text on the document, and all of it is translated. US offices do not always require the apostille; the institution will say.

In the US the diploma and grades are used for school placement (see school enrollment translations), community college, adult education, employers and credential evaluation. See the Colombian transcript and birth certificate pages, and our Spanish page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the acta de grado as well as the diploma?

Often, yes. It is a separate document recording the graduation, and many institutions and evaluators ask for both.

What does "Desempeño Básico" mean?

It is a passing level on Colombia's national scale, between Alto and Bajo. We translate it as printed and leave interpretation to the evaluator.

Is my Saber 11 report translated too?

Yes, if you need it. It is a separate document and priced as one.

Ready to get started?
