Bachillerato General Unificado and the refrendación
Ecuador's upper secondary is the three-year Bachillerato General Unificado (BGU), which follows ten years of basic education and ends with the título de Bachiller — in sciences, or technical in a named specialty. The title is registered (refrendado) by the Ministry of Education, and the registration number and date can be checked online, where a certificate of the registered title can also be printed for titles back to 1985.
Since 2012 bachillerato marks run from 1 to 10 with 7 the pass; older records use a scale out of 20. Grade certificates (certificados de calificaciones) are translated with every subject and year, and the marks stay as printed; their US meaning is for a credential evaluator.
What to send, and how it is used
Send the title, the grade certificates and, if you have it, the ministry's registration certificate; each is a separate document and each is translated in full, with the refrendación number. Ecuador has been a party to the Apostille Convention since 2005, so documents prepared for use abroad may carry an apostille, which is translated too.
In the US they are used to place students in school (see school enrollment translations), for community college and adult education admission, by employers and for evaluation before university — see the Ecuadorian transcript page. Names follow the passport and the birth certificate. See our Spanish page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
What is the refrendación number on my title?
The Ministry of Education's registration of the title. It is translated exactly, since it is what lets a reader verify the title.
My older certificates are out of 20, my newer ones out of 10.
Ecuador changed scales in 2012. Each certificate keeps its own scale in the translation.
