Preuniversitario and the título de bachiller
Cuban students finish secundaria básica at 9th grade and then, on the academic route, three years of preuniversitario (10th to 12th grade), ending with the título de bachiller. Others take technical and vocational training ending with a técnico medio title, whose specialty is translated rather than dropped. The marks are on a separate certification of grades, year by year, and offices that ask for a diploma usually want that certification as well.
Since the 1990-91 school year Cuban marks are out of 100 with 60 the pass; older records used 70 as the pass, and some subjects are graded in words (Excelente, Muy bien, Bien). The translation keeps each mark on its own scale; conversion is for a credential evaluator.
No apostille, often only a copy
Cuba is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so a Cuban school document never carries an apostille; documents prepared for use abroad may carry legalization stamps from Cuban authorities, and those are translated. Many Cubans in the US hold photocopies or documents collected by relatives; we translate what was issued, and the school or office receiving it decides whether it is enough.
Uses: school placement for teenagers (see school enrollment translations), community college and adult education admission, employers, and evaluation before university — see the Cuban transcript page. Both surnames follow the passport and the birth certificate. See our Spanish page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
My Cuban title has no apostille.
That is normal: Cuba is not in the Apostille Convention. We translate the title and any legalization stamps it has.
I only have a photocopy.
We can translate a copy. Whether a copy is accepted is up to the receiving institution.
Do you convert Cuban marks to a US GPA?
No. Marks out of 100, and word grades such as Muy bien, are translated as printed; an evaluator converts them.
