The Ethiopian calendar is seven to eight years behind, and has thirteen months
An Ethiopian document dated 2016 was issued in 2023 or 2024. The Ethiopian calendar runs roughly seven years and eight months behind the Gregorian one, its new year falls in September, and it has thirteen months — twelve of thirty days and a short one of five or six. A date in the thirteenth month, Pagume, has no Gregorian month to map onto.
Converting by subtracting a fixed number is wrong for part of every year, because the offset changes at the September new year. We convert each date individually and give both, which matters when a USCIS officer is checking whether a birth date matches across three documents.
There are no surnames
An Ethiopian name is the person's given name followed by their father's given name, and sometimes the grandfather's. Nothing in it is a family name: a woman does not change her name on marriage, and siblings share the second element only because they share a father.
US forms put the second element in the surname box, which makes a mother and child appear unrelated and a married couple appear to have different families. We set the name out as the document writes it and say what each element is. Amharic is written in Ge'ez script, which has no capital letters, so a name transliterates several ways — we match the passport spelling and note the variants.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
My certificate says 2016 but I was born in 2023.
The Ethiopian calendar is about seven years and eight months behind. We convert each date individually and give both.
Which of my names is the surname?
None of them. The second element is your father's given name. We label it rather than letting a form file it as a family name.
What Ethiopian documents do you translate?
Birth, marriage and death certificates from the kebele or municipality, national IDs, school and university records, court papers and police clearance certificates.
