English at university, other languages before it
Ethiopian universities teach in English, and most university transcripts are issued in English, with Amharic only in seals and stamps. School records differ: pupils are taught in their mother tongue through primary school and switch to English at grade nine, so earlier records are in Amharic, Afaan Oromoo, Tigrinya or another regional language.
We look at the transcript first and translate only what is not in English. Grades are translated as printed and not converted; that is a credential evaluator's job. See our credential evaluation page.
Authentication and Ethiopian dates
Within Ethiopia, the Education and Training Authority authenticates university documents certified by the registrar and the dean or president. For use abroad they go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since Ethiopia is not a party to the Apostille Convention. USCIS requires neither; evaluators set their own rules, and many want transcripts sent by the university.
School years on older records are often given in the Ethiopian calendar, in which the school year starts in Meskerem, around September. We translate each date as written with the Gregorian year in brackets. See the university diploma and high school pages and our Amharic page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My transcript is already in English.
Then it needs no translation, unless stamps or notes are in Amharic. We check before quoting.
Do you convert Ethiopian grades to a US GPA?
No. They are translated as printed; the evaluator converts them.
Should the transcript be authenticated?
USCIS does not require it. An evaluator or university may; ask them what they want.
Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?
Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
