A court decision
Under the Ethiopian Civil Code a change of name is authorised by a court: a change of family name for good cause and where it does not prejudice others, a change of first name on application. The court's decision is the name change document, and the new name may then be recorded in civil registration and on identity documents.
Because an Ethiopian name is made of the given name, the father's name and often the grandfather's, a father who changes his given name leaves his children's existing documents showing the old one. A translated decision lets an office comparing family documents see why.
Spelling differences are not name changes
Many differences between one person's documents are not legal changes at all but different romanisations of the same name, such as Tsegaye and Tsegay, or a name written as one word in one document and two in another. A translation cannot decide which is right; it follows the passport spelling and shows the variant.
Federal and Addis Ababa courts write in Amharic and Oromia courts often in Afaan Oromoo. See our Amharic and Oromo pages and the Ethiopian birth certificate page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My name is spelled differently on different documents.
Usually a romanisation difference, not a name change. We follow the passport spelling and note the others.
My father changed his name after I was born.
Your documents may still show his old name. His court decision, translated, explains the difference.
My names changed when I was adopted.
Ethiopia's Federal Supreme Court cassation bench has held that an adopted child's father's and grandfather's names follow the adoptive parent. We translate the adoption decision and later documents as issued.
