Court judgment first, registration second
In Ethiopia only a court can dissolve a marriage, whether the spouses agree or one of them petitions. The court's judgment is the decree; the divorce is then registered with the civil registration office, which issues a divorce certificate. A US office may ask for either or both, and they are translated as separate documents.
The federal Revised Family Code (Proclamation 213/2000) applies in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, while the regions have family codes of their own, so the articles cited in a judgment depend on where it was granted. Federal and Addis Ababa judgments are in Amharic; Oromia courts often write in Afaan Oromoo, in Latin letters. See our Amharic page and our Oromo page.
Several orders, several dates
Before granting a divorce the court may send the spouses away for a cooling-off period of up to three months, and it may decide the divorce itself and settle property, maintenance or custody later. A file can therefore hold several orders on different dates. Each is translated with its Ethiopian calendar date and the Gregorian equivalent in brackets.
An Ethiopian wife keeps her own name on marriage, so neither spouse's name changes on divorce, and the names on the judgment should match the Ethiopian marriage certificate. If what you have is not a divorce, see our legal separation page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Is the judgment or the certificate my divorce document?
Both record the same divorce. The judgment is the decision; the certificate records its registration. Ask the receiving office which it wants. We translate either or both.
My divorce was granted in Oromia and is in Afaan Oromoo.
That is normal for Oromia courts. We translate from Afaan Oromoo just as from Amharic.
The court gave us a three-month waiting period.
That is the cooling-off period the Family Code allows. The order is translated as issued, with its own date.
