The kebele card and Fayda

For decades the everyday Ethiopian identity document has been the kebele ID card, issued by the local kebele administration. Many are paper cards with the details written by hand and a photograph attached, and most still record the holder's ethnicity. Addis Ababa has redesigned its residence card to carry the holder's Fayda number.

Fayda is the national digital ID set up under Proclamation 1284/2023. It gives each registered person a 12-digit Fayda Identification Number, and the government states that it does not record ethnicity. Officials have said registration is not mandatory, so a file may hold a kebele card, a Fayda credential or both.

What we translate

On a kebele card the handwritten entries are translated as written: name, father's and grandfather's names, date of birth in the Ethiopian calendar with the Gregorian date in brackets, address by woreda and kebele, and any ethnicity field. Cards from Oromia may be in Afaan Oromoo and from Tigray in Tigrinya.

Kebele and woreda are administrative units with no exact US equivalent, so we keep their names and numbers and explain them once. See our Amharic, Oromo and Tigrinya pages, and our Ethiopian passport page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Fayda number the same as my kebele ID number?

No. The Fayda Identification Number is 12 digits and comes from the national ID program; a kebele card has its own number. We reproduce whatever numbers appear.

My kebele ID lists my ethnicity.

Many do. It is part of the card and is translated with everything else.

The handwriting is hard to read.

We translate what is legible and mark anything that is not as illegible, rather than guessing.
