Two Acts, and the certificate names which
An Indian marriage certificate is issued under one of two laws and says which on its face. The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 registers a marriage that has already been solemnised, and applies where both spouses are Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh. The Special Marriage Act, 1954 both solemnises and registers, regardless of religion, and is the route for inter-faith couples.
Which Act appears on the certificate therefore says something about the couple, and it is translated exactly rather than generically. Registration is by a state registrar, so formats vary between states as much as between decades — see our Indian birth certificate page.
Which language is it in
A certificate may be in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Urdu or another language, frequently bilingual with English, and the English half is sometimes a pre-printed form with the substance filled in only in the regional language. What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
