Municipal registries, and what that means for formats
Nicaraguan marriages are registered by the civil registry of the municipality, run by the local mayor's office (alcaldía), and certificates are transcriptions from that municipality's books. Because registration is municipal rather than national, the paper, the layout and the wording vary from one town to the next and one decade to another.

A divorce is recorded as a marginal annotation against the marriage entry rather than as a separate certificate, so a copy of the certificado de matrimonio issued before the divorce shows a marriage still in force — with nothing on it to suggest anything is missing.
