Municipal registries, and what that means for formats
Nicaraguan marriages are registered by the civil registry of the municipality, run by the local alcaldía, and certificates are transcriptions from that municipality's books. The divorce is written on the marriage record
A divorce is recorded as a marginal annotation against the marriage entry rather than as a separate certificate, so a copy of the certificado de matrimonio issued before the divorce shows a marriage still in force — with nothing on it to suggest anything is missing. Order a current copy from the municipal civil registry before paying anyone to translate the one in your drawer.
Where annotations exist, all of them are translated: divorce, annulment, death of a spouse, a change of name, a correction. They are the part an office is usually reading, and a translation that carries the body of the certificate but not the margin is incomplete.
