Wilmington University: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language
Wilmington University does not use foreign transcripts or mark sheets for admission: it requires, in their place, an evaluation from a NACES member (a general report for high school, a course-by-course report for college work, for bachelor's, master's and doctoral applicants), and it also requires one whenever a diploma or transcript is not in English. Wilmington University's evaluation agencies, such as WES, ECE, IERF and Educational Perspectives, accept certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. The translation goes to the agency first, with your records; the agency then evaluates them and sends the report to Wilmington, and that evaluation is not something we provide.

Wilmington University requirements at a glance
| What Wilmington University asks for | |
|---|---|
| Translation | Wilmington states no translation rule. A diploma or transcript that is not in English triggers the evaluation requirement (admission policies, catalog); the translation is what the agency needs before it can evaluate it. |
| Who may translate | Set by the evaluation agency. WES, ECE, IERF, Educational Perspectives and FCSA accept a translation from a professional service (see below). |
| Evaluation | From a NACES member, required if you were educated outside the US or a US territory: a general report for high school, a detailed or course-by-course report with GPA for college (Admission policies). |
| Bachelor's applicants | A general report on the high school record showing a US diploma equivalent; university credits taken abroad evaluated course by course. Fifteen transferable credit hours from a US college waive the high school evaluation (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)). |
| Master's and doctoral applicants | Course-by-course evaluation of the bachelor's (and, for a doctorate, the master's) showing the US degree equivalent (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)). |
| Official or provisional | Official: made by the agency from documents your school sends it, then sent by the agency to Wilmington. Provisional or student-submitted reports allow conditional acceptance only (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)). |
| Timing | The official evaluation must arrive within two semesters of starting, or a hold stops your coursework (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)). |
| Who it applies to | F-1 students, other visa holders, permanent residents, asylees and DACA recipients alike (admission checklists). |
| Does it accept eVerbary? | Yes. Wilmington University asks for an evaluation from a NACES member in place of foreign transcripts (international transcript policy), and WES, a NACES member, accepts a certified translation from a professional translation service (WES translation rules); ECE, IERF and Educational Perspectives accept one as well. Official, provisional and unofficial evaluations
Wilmington's international transcript policy sorts evaluations three ways. An official evaluation is prepared by the NACES company from documents the foreign school sends it directly, and the company sends it to Wilmington. A provisional evaluation is prepared from documents you supply yourself. Any evaluation you hand in yourself counts as unofficial, whatever documents it was based on.
Provisional and unofficial reports are enough for conditional acceptance, so you can start while the school's documents travel. Within two semesters of starting, an official evaluation verified against transcripts sent by the school must arrive, or a hold is placed on your account (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)). The admissions policy adds that the evaluation must be made from an original, official document from each institution and reach Wilmington by postal mail or from the agency (Admission policies). If your records are not in English, the agency needs the translation for both stages; ask it whether the translation from the provisional file carries over to the official one.
What each evaluation agency asks for the translation
Wilmington accepts the NACES company of your choosing, so the translation rule is the agency's. WES wants an exact, word-for-word translation by a professional translator, such as a certified translation agency or another professional service; it does not accept translations by applicants and does not translate documents itself. Educational Perspectives accepts translations from a reputable translation agency or a certified professional translator and also sells its own.
ECE asks for complete, word-for-word translations in the same format as the original and lets applicants prepare them themselves; for $85 it sells a Translation Waiver, under which ECE translates internally for the report and no translation is delivered to you. IERF asks for typed, line-by-line, word-for-word translations and reserves the right to require a professional one; its glossary calls a professional translation required. FCSA asks for a certified translation, accepts most professional agencies, and takes non-certified translations of Spanish documents. Other NACES members set their own rules, some stricter: read the agency's page before you order.
When the evaluation falls short
The report must show the minimum Wilmington needs for the program: a US high school diploma for a bachelor's, a US bachelor's degree for a master's, a US master's for a doctorate. If it does not, the application cannot go forward. The policy suggests sending the evaluator additional coursework or another degree so it can reassess the equivalency, or completing a bachelor's at Wilmington, which accepts up to 90 undergraduate credits in transfer (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)).
International credits are reviewed by academic staff, by Transfer Credit Evaluation for undergraduates and by program chairs for graduate programs, and not all of them transfer into every program (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)).
Documents applicants usually translate
- Secondary school diploma and transcripts, for the general report (bachelor's applicants)
- University transcripts and mark sheets, for the course-by-course report
- Bachelor's degree certificate, for master's applicants
- Bachelor's and master's degree certificates and transcripts, for doctoral applicants
- Records of additional coursework, if the agency has to reassess the equivalency
What an eVerbary translation includes
- A complete English translation of every page, stamps, seals and handwritten notes included, laid out like the original so each line can be matched.
- Grades exactly as recorded, with the grading scale the document prints. We never convert marks to a US GPA.
- A signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead, with our contact details, delivered as a PDF you can upload.
- $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, certification included; 24 hours for one to three pages as standard. Regular clients who need it can get delivery in as little as 30 minutes, on request.
Uploading the translation to Wilmington University
For foreign records, the translation is not sent to Wilmington: it goes to the NACES agency with your documents (WES, for example, takes it in your WES account). The agency sends the evaluation to Wilmington; the admissions policy allows postal mail or delivery from the agency (Admission policies).
US college transcripts follow a separate route: the US school sends them through a secure portal or by sealed mail to the Office of Admissions in New Castle (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)).
What we do not do
eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For Wilmington University that means we translate your records for the agency; the general or course-by-course evaluation is ordered by you from a NACES member after the translation, and the agency sends it to Wilmington.
How to order
- Scan or photograph every page of the document, front and back, including any stamps on the reverse.
- Upload it, choose the language and "certified", and see the price before paying.
- Receive the PDF, usually within 24 hours for one to three pages, and upload it with the copy of the original wherever the institution asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Does Wilmington University accept a translated foreign transcript?
No. Transcripts and mark sheets from another country cannot be used; a NACES evaluation is submitted in their place (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)). The translation goes to the evaluation agency, which asks for it: WES, for example, wants one from a professional translator (WES).
Which evaluation agency does Wilmington accept?
Any member of NACES, chosen by you and paid by you (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)). Their translation rules differ; compare them before ordering the translation.
Can I start classes before the official evaluation arrives?
Yes, on conditional acceptance with a provisional or unofficial evaluation; the official one must arrive within two semesters of starting, or a hold is placed on your account (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)).
Do I need a high school evaluation if I already studied at a US college?
Not if you have 15 transferable credit hours from a US college or university; that waives the evaluation of international high school transcripts (International student transcript policy (PDF, wilmu.edu)).
I am a permanent resident. Does the evaluation rule apply to me?
Yes. The checklists for permanent residents, asylees and DACA recipients also require an official NACES evaluation if you were educated outside the US (International admission process and checklists).
Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?
No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
