The University of Alabama: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

The University of Alabama asks international freshmen to have foreign high school transcripts evaluated by a NACES member and translated if not in English, without saying who translates, and its Graduate School asks for a word-for-word translation uploaded to the application portal, suggesting the American Translators Association to find translators and translation companies. The University of Alabama accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. Undergraduate admission also needs the NACES course-by-course evaluation, which we do not provide.

What UA asks for
Translation (freshman)High school transcripts from outside the US must be evaluated by a NACES member and translated if not in English (International freshman admission). No translator type is named.
Translation (graduate)A word-for-word translation of any transcript or mark sheet not in English, uploaded in the application portal; ATA is suggested to find a translator (Graduate School: international applicants).
Evaluation (undergraduate)Course-by-course with a GPA calculation from a NACES member; preferred: ECE, IEE, The Evaluation Company, WES. The agency emails the evaluation and supporting documents to intladm@ua.edu (freshman, transfer).
Evaluation (graduate)Not necessary; the Graduate School converts other grading scales to 4.0 (Graduate School: admission requirements).
Transfer course descriptionsIn English, with required readings, class hours per course and term length, for any foreign course you want credited (International transfer admission).
Graduate transcriptsUpload a legible transcript for each school where you earned at least 15 semester hours; final official transcripts are sent by the institution only after admission (Graduate School: admission requirements).
TimingGraduate: apply at least six months before your first semester (Graduate School: international applicants). Registrar: about 7 business days to process an official transcript (Registrar: transfer credit).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. UA's international freshman page asks for transcripts translated into English without restricting who translates, and the Graduate School asks for a word-for-word translation and points to ATA translators and translation companies, so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets both. Undergraduates: translation and evaluation together

UA does not read foreign high school records on its own. Freshmen from schools outside the US have their transcripts evaluated by a NACES member agency, course-by-course with a GPA calculation, and translated if they are not in English; when the evaluation is done, the agency emails the official evaluation and supporting documents directly to intladm@ua.edu (International freshman admission). UA looks for a cumulative 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and names ECE, IEE, The Evaluation Company and WES as preferred agencies.

Transfers with college work outside the US follow the same NACES course-by-course rule. To get credit for a foreign course, they also send course descriptions or syllabi in English listing required readings, class hours and the length of each term (International transfer admission). Applicants with fewer than 24 college hours also send their high school diploma and transcripts. Each agency has its own translation rules; see translation for credential evaluation.

Graduate School: upload, no evaluation, word-for-word

The Graduate School decides on what you upload: a legible transcript or mark sheet for each college where you earned at least 15 semester hours, with a grading key if your school does not use letter grades. Evaluations from credentialing services are not necessary, and the Graduate School converts other grading scales to 4.0 itself (Graduate School: admission requirements). Any transcript not in English needs a word-for-word translation uploaded in the same portal.

Final official transcripts showing your degree are needed only after admission, sent directly by the institution. To leave time for the visa, international applicants should finish the application at least six months before their first semester.

Where UA's graduate pages differ

The international applicants page asks for an "official" word-for-word translation and gives grad.transcripts@ua.edu for final transcripts; the general requirements page asks for a "certified" word-for-word translation and gives graduatetranscripts@ua.edu. We have not resolved these differences. A certified word-for-word translation from a professional service fits both wordings; confirm the transcript address with the Graduate School before your school sends anything.

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to UA

Graduate applicants upload each transcript and its word-for-word translation in the application portal; official transcripts follow after admission, sent by the school (Graduate School: international applicants).

Undergraduates send documents and translations to their NACES agency, which emails the evaluation and supporting documents to intladm@ua.edu (International freshman admission).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UA that means we translate your transcripts, diplomas and course descriptions; the NACES course-by-course evaluation undergraduates need comes from an evaluation agency.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my transcripts for the UA Graduate School?

The Graduate School asks for a word-for-word translation and suggests the American Translators Association, an association of translators and translation companies. A certified translation from eVerbary, an ATA corporate member, qualifies.

Do I need WES for graduate admission at UA?

No. Evaluations from credentialing services are not necessary; the Graduate School converts grades to a 4.0 scale itself (Graduate School: admission requirements).

What do international freshmen send?

A NACES course-by-course evaluation with GPA of the high school transcript, translated if not in English, emailed by the agency to intladm@ua.edu (International freshman admission).

Do my course descriptions need to be in English?

Yes, for transfer credit from a school abroad, with required readings, class hours and term length (International transfer admission).

When should I apply to a graduate program?

At least six months before your first semester, to allow time for the visa (Graduate School: international applicants).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
