University of Alabama at Birmingham: Translation Requirements for Documents in Another Language

UAB's international freshman page says all documents must be sent in English, and its Graduate School asks for transcripts and degree statements in the original language and in English; neither names who has to translate. UAB accepts certified translations from professional services such as eVerbary. For course-by-course transfer credit UAB has a stricter rule (home university or an ATA-certified translator, mailed sealed), and graduate evaluations come from UAB itself or a NACES agency, which we do not provide.

$100 UAB evaluation

The Graduate School can evaluate your transcript in-house, once.

Evaluation replaces translation

Graduate applicants with an approved evaluation skip translations.

Sealed for articulation

Transfer course matching has its own translator rule.

What UAB asks for
Translation (freshman)All documents must be sent in English (source). No translator type is named.
Translation (graduate)Transcripts and degree statements in the original language and in English; not needed if you submit an approved evaluation (source).
Translation (transfer articulation)Certified by your home university and sent by it, or sent sealed directly to UAB by an ATA-certified translator, with the original-language documents (source).
Evaluation (undergraduate)UAB's own credential evaluators review foreign university transcripts and use the evaluated GPA (minimum 2.00) to decide; allow five to 10 business days (source).
Evaluation (graduate)Course-by-course: UAB's International Evaluation team for a one-time $100, or any NACES member (source).
OriginalsGraduate School: original transcripts or mark sheets with an official stamp, plus a stamped degree statement; scans and faxes are unofficial (source).
Applying from abroadStudents living and studying outside the US are sent to apply through INTO UAB (freshman, transfer).
Does it accept eVerbary?Yes. UAB's freshman requirements ask for documents in English without restricting who translates (freshman page), and the Graduate School asks for an English version of each transcript and degree statement (graduate page), so a certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets those rules. Graduate School: translate, or let UAB evaluate

UAB's Graduate School needs a course-by-course evaluation of all non-US coursework, and it offers its own: the International Evaluation team does it for a flat $100, chosen when you submit the application, and the fee covers any later graduate application to UAB. The alternative is any NACES member agency. UAB evaluates in-house only institutions on a 4.0 scale and may ask for a NACES evaluation instead (source).

The translation rule depends on that choice. Transcripts and degree statements have to be in the original language and in English, but applicants who submit an approved evaluation are not required to submit English translations (source). If your school is not on a 4.0 scale, or you are not sure the in-house route applies, plan for the translation. Originals with the official stamp go to the Graduate School; online-only students can include a stamped return envelope to get them back.

Transfer credit: a stricter translator rule

Getting foreign courses matched to UAB courses (articulation) has its own page. Course syllabi or catalog descriptions come from your home university with a cover letter on letterhead, and if your country's language is not English everything must be translated. UAB lists two options: a translation certified and sent by your home university, or one sent in a sealed envelope directly to UAB by an ATA-certified translator, together with the original-language documents (source).

UAB adds a disclaimer that it does not employ or endorse ATA-certified translators or ATA member agencies (source). eVerbary is an ATA corporate member (#273062), not an individually certified translator, and delivers translations as PDFs to you. For articulation, check with UAB's Office of International Admissions what it will accept before ordering.

Documents applicants usually translate

What an eVerbary translation includes

Uploading the translation to UAB

Freshman and transfer applicants have transcripts sent directly by the school, by mail or a secure service such as Parchment, choosing UAB as recipient (source). Include the English translation with each document.

Graduate applicants upload documents in the application and then send the stamped originals with their English versions to the Graduate School, unless they rely on an approved evaluation (source).

What we do not do

eVerbary is a translation service, not a credential evaluation service: we do not issue evaluations, US equivalencies or GPA conversions, and we cannot send documents on behalf of the school that issued them. For UAB that means the course-by-course evaluation comes from UAB's own evaluators or a NACES agency, and translations UAB wants mailed sealed by the translator for articulation are outside what we do.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate my documents for a UAB freshman application?

The freshman page says all documents must be sent in English and does not restrict who translates (source). A certified translation from a professional service such as eVerbary meets that rule.

Do I need a translation if UAB evaluates my graduate transcript?

No. The Graduate School says applicants with an approved transcript evaluation do not need to submit English translations (source).

How much is UAB's graduate transcript evaluation?

A one-time flat fee of $100, valid for any future graduate application to UAB; it applies to institutions on a 4.0 scale (source).

Can any translator do the translation for transfer articulation?

No. UAB accepts a translation certified and sent by your home university, or one mailed sealed to UAB by an ATA-certified translator (source).

How long does UAB take to evaluate a foreign transcript?

Five to 10 business days after all documents arrive, for undergraduate applicants (source).

Will eVerbary convert my grades to a US GPA?

No. The translation reproduces the grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear. A GPA conversion is credential evaluation, which the institution or an evaluation agency does.
