The national number and the card
Since 2011 every Sudanese citizen registered in the civil registry has an 11-digit national number (al-raqm al-watani) that never changes. The identity card is issued from age 16 by the civil registry of the Ministry of Interior; a smart card with a chip was announced in October 2017 to replace the first, cream-coloured card. It is bank-card size, in Arabic with western numerals, with an MRZ on the back, and is normally valid for five years.
Many people use the A4 civil registration certificate (shahadat al-qayd al-madani) instead: a printout showing the national number and personal details in Arabic, with a QR code. Card production stopped for a time in 2021, so expired cards and these certificates are both common. See our Arabic page.
Older papers and the name chain
Before 2011, Sudanese proved identity with a nationality certificate and an older ID card; the 2011 Act replaced the nationality certificate with the ID card. People born before 2011 in what is now South Sudan may hold those older Sudanese papers, which are translated as the documents they are.
The card shows a given name and three paternal names, which US forms split in different places. We keep the order and use your passport's spelling. See the Sudanese passport page and the Sudanese birth certificate page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My ID card has expired.
Expired Sudanese cards are common because production was interrupted. We translate it as it is; whether it is accepted is up to the office.
I only have the civil registration certificate.
It carries the national number and is widely used as proof of identity. We translate it in full, including the QR caption.
Is my national number the same as my ID card number?
We copy both exactly as printed, so the office can see which is which.
