The acte de décès and the hospital certificate

A death in the DRC is declared to the civil registrar (officier de l'état civil) of the place where it happened, who draws up the death act (acte de décès) in French. A hospital or doctor issues a separate medical certificate of death. They are different documents: the act is the civil status record a US office normally wants, the medical certificate is evidence behind it.

Many deaths, especially in the east during the conflicts, were never declared on time. A death registered late counts only as information unless it is entered under a court judgment, so families often hold a jugement déclaratif de décès instead of, or before, the act. We translate the judgment in full, with the witnesses heard and the order to the registrar.

Old names on old records

Acts from before 1997 say République du Zaïre, and places may be named under provinces that no longer exist: Katanga, Kasaï-Oriental or Équateur were split in the 2015 reform. We translate the names exactly as printed and do not update them, so the record matches the archive it came from.

A death certificate is usually read with the deceased's marriage certificate in a widow's or widower's case, or with a birth certificate to prove the family link. See our French page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

I only have the hospital's death certificate.

We translate it as what it is, a medical certificate. Whether it is enough instead of the civil act is for the receiving office to decide.

The death was registered years later by a court.

Then the jugement déclaratif is the key document. We translate it in full, including the transcription order.

The act says Zaïre. Will you write DRC?

No. We translate the act as issued, so it says Republic of Zaire, and can add a translator's note on the later name.
