Talaq, judicial divorce and khul'
Mauritanian law knows three ways a marriage ends: talaq, the husband's repudiation; judicial divorce (tatliq), granted by a judge at either spouse's request; and khul', where the wife asks the court to end the marriage in return for compensation or giving up financial rights. Under the Personal Status Code the divorce goes through the court, and the judge first tries to reconcile the spouses.
The divorce is then registered at a citizens' centre. Registration is due within 15 days; after that a court judgment confirming the divorce is needed first. A file may therefore hold a court decision, a confirmation judgment and a divorce certificate, each with its own date, and we translate each as a separate document.
What the certificate shows
The divorce certificate carries both spouses' NNI and personal details, the reference number of the marriage record, the type or reason for the divorce and whether the wife is pregnant. These entries are required by the registration law and are translated as they stand. The reference number lets an office match it to the Mauritanian marriage certificate.
Court decisions are in Arabic; extracts from the registry may be in French. See our Arabic page. If what you have is a court order on maintenance or custody rather than a divorce, see the legal separation page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my divorce certificate say whether I was pregnant?
The registration law requires it. It is translated as written.
What is khul'?
A divorce the wife obtains from the court in return for compensation. The translation keeps the term and explains it once.
I only have the court judgment.
We translate it. Ask the receiving office whether it also wants the certificate of registration.
